James Tissot (1836-1902) was a French painter and illustrator renowned for his vivid depictions of Victorian society and biblical scenes. Educated at the École des Beaux-Arts, Tissot initially gained acclaim for his genre scenes and portraiture, characterized by meticulous detail and lush color. His work often reflected the opulence of the period and a fascination with fashion. Later in life, Tissot converted to Christianity, which profoundly influenced his art, leading him to create a series of elaborate illustrations of the Bible. His artistic legacy is marked by a blend of historical accuracy and rich, evocative imagery.
