John Singleton Copley (1738–1815) was a prominent American-born painter known for his masterful portraits of colonial New England figures. Born in Boston, Copley was largely self-taught and gained early acclaim for his realistic depictions of merchants, politicians, and families, capturing both likeness and character with meticulous detail. His works, such as Paul Revere and Boy with a Flying Squirrel, showcased his technical brilliance. In 1774, he moved to London, joining the Royal Academy and expanding into historical painting. Copley’s career bridged American colonial and British art traditions, and his portraits remain key records of Revolutionary-era America and its people.
