George Stubbs (1724–1806) was a British painter best known for his detailed and anatomically precise depictions of horses. Born in Liverpool, Stubbs was largely self-taught and pursued his interest in anatomy through independent study. His dedication to scientific observation culminated in the groundbreaking publication The Anatomy of the Horse (1766), a series of engravings based on his dissections, which earned him lasting respect in both artistic and scientific circles.

Stubbs gained prominence in the 1760s as a specialist in equine portraiture, capturing not only the physical accuracy of horses but also their individuality and spirit. His work appealed to the British aristocracy, who commissioned him to paint prized racehorses, hunts, and rural scenes. Stubbs often depicted animals in naturalistic settings, blending landscape and portraiture with elegance and restraint.

In addition to horses, Stubbs painted exotic animals such as lions, tigers, and kangaroos, reflecting the era’s growing interest in exploration and natural history. His ability to combine scientific precision with artistic grace set him apart from his contemporaries.

Though often overlooked in favor of more dramatic painters of his time, Stubbs is now recognized as a master of animal painting and an important figure in 18th-century British art.
