Robert John Thornton (c. 1768–1837) was an English physician and botanical writer best known for his ambitious and visually stunning publication The Temple of Flora. Trained in medicine at Cambridge, Thornton developed a deep passion for botany and sought to merge science and art through elaborate botanical illustrations. The Temple of Flora, published between 1799 and 1807, featured dramatic, large-scale prints that combined scientific accuracy with artistic romanticism. Though the project was financially disastrous, it became a landmark in botanical art. Thornton’s work remains celebrated for its bold fusion of scientific inquiry and aesthetic beauty, securing his legacy in both fields.
