Johannes Vermeer (1632–1675) was a Dutch Baroque painter renowned for his masterful use of light and quiet, intimate domestic scenes. Working in Delft, Vermeer created a relatively small body of work, yet his paintings are celebrated for their exquisite detail, luminous color, and serene compositions. He often depicted women engaged in everyday tasks, capturing moments of stillness and introspection. Vermeer’s precise technique and subtle handling of perspective and light set him apart from his contemporaries. Though relatively obscure during his lifetime, his work was rediscovered in the 19th century and is now considered among the finest achievements in Western art.
