John William Waterhouse (1849–1917) was a British painter renowned for his evocative depictions of mythological, literary, and historical subjects. Born in Rome to English artist parents, he moved to London as a child and later studied at the Royal Academy of Art. Initially influenced by classical themes and the Academic style, Waterhouse gradually embraced the sensibilities of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, though his career emerged decades after their peak.
