John La Farge (1835–1910) was an innovative American artist known for his contributions to stained glass, painting, and illustration. Born in New York City, he studied law before pursuing art, traveling to Europe and studying under Thomas Couture. La Farge became a pioneer in American stained glass, developing opalescent glass techniques that influenced Louis Comfort Tiffany. His work includes religious murals, landscapes, and book illustrations, often infused with symbolism and rich color. A key figure in the American Aesthetic Movement, La Farge also wrote extensively on art and culture. His creativity and technical innovations left a lasting artistic legacy.
