Daniel Ridgway Knight (1839–1924) was an American painter celebrated for his idyllic depictions of rural life, particularly of peasant women in the French countryside. Born in Pennsylvania, he studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and later at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris under Jean-Louis-Ernest Meissonier. Settling in France, Knight found inspiration in the pastoral landscapes along the Seine. His paintings, marked by exquisite detail, natural light, and serene compositions, gained widespread acclaim. He exhibited widely, winning medals at international expositions. Knight’s romanticized yet dignified portrayals of rural laborers earned him enduring popularity in Europe and America.
