John Trumbull (1756–1843) was an American painter known as the “Painter of the Revolution” for his iconic depictions of Revolutionary War scenes. Born in Connecticut, Trumbull studied at Harvard before joining the Continental Army, where he served as a soldier and aide to General Washington. After the war, he traveled to London to study under Benjamin West, refining his neoclassical style. Trumbull’s most famous works include The Declaration of Independence, part of a series of historical paintings commissioned for the U.S. Capitol. His art captures key moments in American history, solidifying his legacy as a foundational figure in American art.
