Thomas Wilmer Dewing (1851–1938) was an American painter associated with the Tonalist movement. Born in Boston, he studied at the Académie Julian in Paris. Dewing is known for his ethereal, atmospheric paintings featuring elegant female figures in contemplative settings, often rendered in muted tones and delicate color palettes. His work blends realism with a dreamlike quality, emphasizing mood and subtle tonal variations. A member of the Ten American Painters, he contributed significantly to Gilded Age art. His works are housed in major collections, including the Smithsonian American Art Museum and the Freer Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C.
