Robert Henri (1865–1929) was a leading American painter and teacher, central to the development of the Ashcan School, which emphasized realism and everyday scenes. Born in Cincinnati, Ohio, Henri studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and in Paris, where he was influenced by European modernists. He returned to the U.S. committed to depicting the vitality of urban life, often focusing on New York’s diverse neighborhoods and working-class subjects. Henri’s bold brushwork and expressive style captured the spirit of his subjects with empathy and depth. As an influential teacher, he inspired a generation of artists to embrace authenticity in their work.
