Joseph Schillinger (1895–1943) was a Ukrainian-born American music theorist, composer, and educator known for developing the Schillinger System of Musical Composition. This mathematical approach to music aimed to provide a structured, scientific method for creating compositions across all genres. After emigrating to the United States, Schillinger taught in New York City, influencing notable musicians such as George Gershwin, Glenn Miller, and Benny Goodman. His system emphasized rhythm, counterpoint, and form through precise formulas and geometric patterns. Though controversial, his work sought to bridge art and science, leaving a lasting impact on 20th-century music theory and education.
