Belcher Mosaic Glass, patented in 1886 by American inventor and craftsman Edward Belcher, represents a unique and innovative method of stained glass production during the late 19th century. Unlike traditional stained glass techniques, which involved leading individual glass pieces together, Belcher’s method used a molded matrix of copper strips embedded in a thermoplastic compound. Small, irregularly shaped pieces of colored glass were arranged within this matrix, and the entire panel was then heated, allowing the compound to bond and solidify the design.
