Henri Rousseau (1844–1910) was a French Post-Impressionist painter known for his distinctive, dreamlike jungle scenes and imaginative style. A self-taught artist and former customs officer, Rousseau developed a naive, or “primitive,” approach characterized by flat perspectives, bold colors, and meticulous detail. Though initially ridiculed by critics, he gained recognition later in life, admired by avant-garde artists like Picasso and the Surrealists. Rousseau never left France, yet vividly depicted exotic landscapes inspired by books, botanical gardens, and imagination. His unique vision and unorthodox technique earned him a lasting place in art history as a pioneer of modernist and visionary art.
