Louis Wain (1860 – 1939) was an English artist whose whimsical, anthropomorphic cat illustrations popularized feline imagery in late Victorian and Edwardian Britain. Beginning as a newspaper illustrator, Wain produced hundreds of humorous cartoons, postcards, and book illustrations that depicted cats in human activities, affecting popular attitudes toward pet cats. He worked for publications including the Illustrated London News and created successful greeting cards. Later in life Wain suffered from mental illness and spent time in psychiatric hospitals, where his style grew more abstract. Despite personal struggles, his prolific output and distinctive, expressive cats secured a lasting legacy in illustration and culture.
