El Greco, born Doménikos Theotokópoulos in 1541 on the island of Crete, was a master painter, sculptor, and architect of the Spanish Renaissance. Trained in the post-Byzantine tradition of icon painting, he later moved to Venice and absorbed the influence of Renaissance masters like Titian and Tintoretto. Around 1577, he settled in Toledo, Spain, where he developed his distinctive, highly expressive style.
El Greco’s work is known for its dramatic use of elongated figures, bold colors, and intense emotional content. His religious paintings, such as *The Burial of the Count of Orgaz* and *The Disrobing of Christ*, reveal a deep spirituality and visionary power that set him apart from his contemporaries. While his style was considered unorthodox in his time, it later earned him recognition as a precursor to modern movements such as Expressionism and Cubism.
