James Ensor (1860–1949) was a Belgian painter and printmaker celebrated for his imaginative, often satirical works. Born in Ostend, he studied at the Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts in Brussels but soon rejected academic conventions. Ensor became known for his bold use of color, fantastical imagery, and grotesque masks, which he used to critique society, politics, and religion. His masterpiece The Entry of Christ into Brussels in 1889 epitomizes his biting social commentary and unique style. Though linked with Symbolism and Expressionism, Ensor defied easy categorization. By the end of his career, he was recognized as a pioneer of modern art.
