Alice Pike Barney (1857–1931) was an American painter, playwright, and influential patron of the arts. Born in Cincinnati, she pursued art after meeting Oscar Wilde, eventually studying in Paris under leading artists. Her paintings, often symbolic and expressive, gained recognition in Europe and the United States. Barney became a central figure in Washington, D.C.’s cultural scene, hosting salons, exhibiting widely, and supporting young artists. She also founded the National Sylvan Theater. A progressive thinker, she embraced spiritual and artistic exploration. Her two daughters, Natalie and Laura, also became notable cultural figures. Barney’s legacy continues through her art and activism.
