John Everett Millais (1829–1896) was a British painter and illustrator, and one of the founding members of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. Born in Southampton to a wealthy family, he showed artistic talent from a young age and entered the Royal Academy Schools at just 11, becoming its youngest ever student. Alongside Dante Gabriel Rossetti and William Holman Hunt, Millais sought to reform British art by rejecting academic conventions and returning to the vivid detail and sincerity of early Renaissance painting.
