Sir Joshua Reynolds (1723–1792) was a leading English portraitist and a central figure in 18th-century British art. Born in Devon, he trained in London and later traveled to Italy, where he absorbed classical and Renaissance influences. Reynolds became the first president of the Royal Academy of Arts in 1768 and was knighted in 1769. Renowned for his grand style, he painted many of Britain’s elite, including writers, politicians, and nobility, emphasizing idealized beauty and historical allusion. His influential Discourses on Art shaped artistic theory for generations. Reynolds’ work helped elevate portraiture to a respected genre within British academic art.
