Jacques Louis David (1748–1825) was a highly influential French painter, regarded as the leading figure of Neoclassicism. Known for his precise, classical style and dramatic compositions, David’s works often depicted historical and mythological subjects. His notable paintings include The Oath of the Horatii and The Death of Marat. A passionate supporter of the French Revolution, David used his art for political expression. He later became Napoleon Bonaparte’s court painter, producing grand, iconic images of the emperor. David’s style emphasized clarity, order, and heroism, making him one of the most significant artists of his era.
