John White Alexander (1856–1915) was an American painter and illustrator known for his elegant portraits and decorative works. Born in Allegheny, Pennsylvania, he began as an apprentice at Harper’s Weekly before studying art in Europe. Influenced by the Symbolist and Art Nouveau movements, his work features flowing lines, soft color palettes, and graceful compositions. He gained acclaim for portraits of prominent figures and striking depictions of women. Alexander was a member of the National Academy of Design and served as its president. His works are displayed in institutions like the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Smithsonian American Art Museum.
