Edward Mitchell Bannister (1828–1901) was a pioneering African American artist known for his atmospheric landscape paintings. Born in Canada and later settling in Providence, Rhode Island, Bannister was largely self-taught, drawing inspiration from the Barbizon School and American Luminism. Despite facing racial prejudice, he achieved national recognition when his painting Under the Oaks won first prize at the 1876 Philadelphia Centennial Exposition. Bannister co-founded the Providence Art Club and was deeply involved in his local arts community. His serene, pastoral scenes reflect a deep spiritual connection to nature. Bannister’s work paved the way for future generations of Black American artists.
