Caravaggio (1571–1610), born Michelangelo Merisi in Milan, was a revolutionary Italian Baroque painter known for his dramatic use of light and shadow, or chiaroscuro. His realistic approach to the human figure broke from idealized Renaissance traditions, infusing religious scenes with raw emotion and gritty realism. Masterpieces like The Calling of Saint Matthew and Judith Beheading Holofernes display his intense style and psychological depth. A tumultuous figure, Caravaggio led a violent life, often in conflict with the law. Despite dying young under mysterious circumstances, his work profoundly influenced later artists and reshaped the course of Western painting. His legacy endures worldwide.
