Frank Duveneck (1848–1919) was an influential American painter, teacher, and muralist associated with the Munich School and American Realism. Born in Covington, Kentucky, he studied in Munich, where his bold brushwork and dark, dramatic palette gained attention. Duveneck became known for his vigorous portraits and genre scenes, blending European academic techniques with a fresh, direct style. He taught many prominent American artists, including John White Alexander and Elizabeth Boott, whom he later married. Duveneck exhibited widely in Europe and the U.S., earning critical acclaim. His legacy endures through his art and his role in shaping American painting in the late 19th century.
