Mary Vaux Walcott’s North American Wild Flowers, published by the Smithsonian Institution in 1925, stands as one of the great achievements in botanical art. Known as the “Audubon of Botany,” Walcott spent decades traversing the wilderness of the United States and the Canadian Rockies, painting wildflowers in the field — sometimes up to seventeen hours a day — capturing each bloom at life size with breathtaking accuracy. The resulting collection of 400 watercolour plates, printed across five magnificent folio volumes using the pioneering Smithsonian Process, introduced the extraordinary diversity of North American flora to the world. These images remain timeless: luminous, precise, and utterly beautiful.
