J.C. Leyendecker (1874–1951) was a German-American illustrator best known for his iconic work in early 20th-century American advertising and magazine covers, particularly for The Saturday Evening Post. Leyendecker’s clean lines, dynamic compositions, and distinctive style defined the era’s visual culture. He created memorable advertising campaigns, most famously for Arrow Collar shirts, and introduced the idea of the modern, fashionable man. His depiction of the “New Year’s Baby” and other iconic characters became annual traditions in American households. Leyendecker’s influence on illustration was profound, inspiring generations of artists, including Norman Rockwell, who admired and emulated his work.
