Gilbert Stuart (1755–1828) was a celebrated American portraitist known for his refined depictions of prominent figures, particularly George Washington. Born in Saunderstown, Rhode Island, he demonstrated artistic promise early on and studied under Scottish painter Cosmo Alexander. Stuart traveled to London in 1775, where he trained with Benjamin West and gained success as a portraitist. Despite his artistic prowess, he struggled with financial mismanagement throughout his life. Upon returning to the U.S., he created the famous Athenaeum portrait of Washington, which appears on the one-dollar bill. Stuart produced over a thousand portraits and remains a foundational figure in American art history.
