Eastman Johnson (1824–1906) was an influential American painter known for his genre scenes and portraits that depicted 19th-century American life with realism and compassion. He trained in Europe, where he was inspired by the Dutch Masters, and returned to the U.S. to paint scenes reflecting American identity. His works include “Negro Life in the South” and “Sugaring Off,” capturing rural life, the lives of African Americans, and Native American portraits. Johnson co-founded the Metropolitan Museum of Art and was celebrated for his technical skill and commitment to portraying the social landscape of his era
