Born in England, he immigrated to the United States with his family in 1792 and settled in Philadelphia, where he developed his artistic career. Sully was influenced by European masters, particularly Thomas Lawrence, and his work is characterized by refined brushwork, soft lighting, and Romantic idealism. His most famous portraits include Thomas Jefferson and Queen Victoria. Sully’s works captured the spirit of the American elite and contributed significantly to the nation’s artistic heritage
