Jean-Léon Gérôme (1824–1904) was a prominent French Academic painter and sculptor, renowned for his highly detailed and realistic depictions of historical, mythological, and Orientalist themes. A master of Academicism, Gérôme’s work blended classical precision with vibrant storytelling, often portraying ancient Roman and Greek scenes, gladiators, and exotic Eastern settings. His famous paintings include The Snake Charmer and Pollice Verso. Gérôme’s precise use of light, color, and texture brought his subjects to life, influencing both painting and sculpture in the 19th century. As a respected teacher at the École des Beaux-Arts, he shaped generations of artists in the French tradition.
