George Caleb Bingham was an American artist born in 1811 in Augusta County, Virginia. He spent much of his childhood in Missouri, where his family relocated when he was young. After working as a cabinetmaker and itinerant portrait painter, Bingham went on to study art in Philadelphia, where he honed his skills as a painter. Bingham is best known for his genre paintings, which depict everyday life in the American West during the 19th century. His paintings often depict scenes of river life, political rallies, and rural gatherings, showcasing the people and culture of his time.

One of Bingham’s most famous works is “The County Election,” which depicts a political rally in Missouri in 1852. The painting captures the energy and excitement of the event, as well as the complex social dynamics of the time. Bingham’s work was well-received in his lifetime, and he achieved significant success as an artist. He served as the Missouri state treasurer from 1862 to 1865 and later as a United States commissioner of customs in Kansas City.

Today, Bingham is remembered as an important figure in American art, and his paintings continue to captivate audiences with their vivid depictions of life in the American West.
