Diego Rivera (1886 – 1957) was a leading Mexican painter and muralist whose work shaped 20th-century public art. Born in Guanajuato, he studied in Mexico City and Europe, absorbing post-impressionist and cubist influences. Rivera returned to Mexico after the Revolution to create large-scale murals depicting Mexican history, indigenous culture, labor, and social struggle. His powerful, accessible imagery combined modernist aesthetics with political commitment to socialism and the working class. Notable works include murals at the National Palace and the Secretaria de Educacion Publica. Rivera’s collaborations and tumultuous marriage to Frida Kahlo further cemented his place in art and cultural history.
