Born in Owosso, Michigan, he studied at the Art Institute of Chicago and the Académie Julian in Paris. Frieseke settled in Giverny, France, where he painted alongside other American expatriates near Claude Monet’s home. His work, influenced by Renoir and Whistler, emphasized light, color, and domestic scenes.
