Kazimir Malevich (1879–1935) was a pioneering Russian avant-garde artist and theorist, best known as the founder of Suprematism, an abstract movement focused on pure geometric forms and color. Born in Kyiv to Polish parents, he studied in Moscow and embraced radical experimentation in art. His iconic work Black Square (1915) became a landmark of modernism, symbolizing a break from traditional representation. Malevich explored painting, design, and theory, influencing generations of abstract artists. Despite facing censorship under Soviet rule, he continued to develop his vision of art as a spiritual pursuit. He died in Leningrad, leaving an enduring artistic legacy.
