Marianne North (1830-1890) was an English botanical artist and explorer renowned for her vivid, in-situ oil paintings of plants from around the world. Self-taught, she abandoned domestic expectations after her father’s death to travel alone across Europe, the Americas, Asia, Africa, Australia, and New Zealand, producing more than eight hundred detailed works. North emphasized living habitats and accurate plant features, often working outdoors. Her generous bequest of paintings and funds to the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, resulted in the Marianne North Gallery, still displaying her collection. Her work broadened public appreciation of global flora and inspired later botanical artists worldwide.
